Firring Strips - Firring strips are installed into the walls at three heights - top, middle and bottom of the wall pad. These firring strips can be attached in one of 3 ways: .22 caliber anchor shot, concrete nails, or screwing directly into the wall. Once the firring strips are installed, complete the wall pad installation as in Method #1. One of the pros of this installation method is that it allows a ¾ inch gap between the wall pad and the wall. This ¾ inch gap can often be used to account for electrical conduit running along the wall. It also tends to be more forgiving with walls that have uneven surfaces. For a perfectly finished installation, all exposed edges should have a firring strip wrapped in vinyl.
